Inside Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion
Lavish parties, numerous sexual encounters and a licence to house zoo animals. Much has been said about what went on behind the grand front gates of the notorious Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, where Hugh Hefner lived from 1971 until his death on Thursday, aged 91.
The Playboy magazine founder paid US$1.1 million for 29-room home and was allowed to remain there when it sold in 2016 for a record-breaking US$100 million to private equity boss Daren Metropoulos.
That he was allowed to stay in home he no longer owned was not the most unusual thing to have happened within the walls of the 1858-square-metre mansion, which has six bedrooms and six bathrooms, a lounge that can be converted into a movie screening room, a games house equipped with poker tables and pinball machines, and a large lagoon-style pool that includes the infamous grotto area which has four separate hot tubs.
The Holmby Hills mansion, which is a block from Sunset Boulevard, is one of the few residential properties in Los Angeles to have a zoo licence and a year-long fireworks permit, thanks to Hefner’s habit of throwing parties at the drop of a hat.

But Hefner once described his palatial home in more peaceful terms.
“One of the very nice things that happens at the mansion is that everyone just mellows out,” US talk show host David Letterman in 1985. “The mansion has developed a reputation as being a kind of Shrangri-la – a sort of an escape from the jungle that’s out there,” he said.
But Letterman wasn’t convinced. “Is it just wild unbelievable sex all night long?” he asked. “Because that’s what everyone thinks it is.”
Hefner smiled and shook his head. “We take time off from the wild sex to watch your show,” he joked.
